Why use mail in your marketing mix?

If you take a survey of routine things people do when they arrive home from work each day, you will find that everyone checks their mailbox.  In addition to e-mail and texting, people still want to pull something out of their mailbox.  People like to hold something in their hand and look it over at their leisure.  Physical mail is still an effective form of communication.   Direct mail advertising:
            Maximizes target market exposure
Develops new customers, clients, and leads
Reminds current customers of their need for your services

According to the US Postmaster General, 2/3 of the people surveyed say they value what they receive in the mail.  In contrast, businesses surveyed thought that statistic would only be 1/3.
Some other facts:

  • 85% of consumers sort through and read selected pieces of mail every day
  • 40% of consumers say they have tried a new business after receiving direct mail
  • 73% of consumers prefer mail for receiving new product announcements or offers from companies they do business with as compared to 18% from email
  • 30% more dollars are spent by multimedia shoppers than single-medium shoppers
  • 67% of online searches are driven by offline messages, with 39% of shoppers making a purchase
  • Websites supported by catalogs yield 163% more revenue than those not supported by catalogs
